// CARE
Look after your scissors and they'll return the favour.
A good pair should last. A great pair should keep performing. A little regular maintenance goes a long way.
THE BASICS
Clean them regularly
Wipe your scissors down with a soft, clean cloth after use, or at least daily. This removes loose hair, moisture and product build-up.
Oil the pivot
A drop of scissor oil on the pivot keeps the action smooth and reduces unnecessary wear. We recommend Hatchet Scissor Oil or another non-petroleum scissor oil. Avoid clipper or machine oils.
Check the tension
Too loose and the blades fold hair. Too tight and they create unnecessary friction. Keep the tension balanced so the scissors open and close smoothly with control. See the Tension Guide below.
Store them properly
When they're not in your hand, keep them in their case. It protects the blades, keeps out dust and helps avoid accidental damage.
Sharpen when needed
All Hatchet scissors are built for long-term performance, but every working tool needs servicing eventually. Professional sharpening keeps them cutting the way they should. We recommend using our in-house sharpening service.

Handle with care
Don't drop them. Don't toss them in a drawer. Treat them like the precision tools they are.
// TENSION GUIDE
Get the tension right and everything changes.
Tension is the single most overlooked part of scissor care. Too loose, the blades fold hair instead of cutting it. Too tight, you'll feel it in your hand, wrist and shoulder by lunch. Dialled in, the scissor disappears in your hand.
THE DROP TEST
The industry standard for checking tension. Takes five seconds.
01. Hold the scissors by the thumb ring with the blades pointing up.
02. Lift the finger ring blade to a full 90° open position.
03. Let it fall under its own weight.
What you're looking for:
The blade should fall smoothly and stop roughly halfway to 2 Thirds closed — leaving about 1 to 2 cm of opening at the tip.
HOW TO ADJUST
Each Hatchet range uses a different tension system. Adjust in small increments and re-test as you go.
-
Fervent — Recessed Tension Screw. Adjust with the included Tension Adjuster Keyring.
-
Prayer, Lourdes & Utopian — Adjustable Tension Knob. Finger adjustable, no tool needed.
A FEW THINGS WORTH KNOWING
-
Check tension daily. Scissors loosen with use. A quick drop test before your first client takes seconds.
-
Adjust in tiny movements. One or two clicks is usually enough.
-
If it doesn't feel right, it isn't. Trust your hand. Your scissors should feel effortless.
